A growing number of companies are using video game-style simulations to spot future executives. Instead of relying solely on resumes and interviews, recruiters are now watching how candidates react when a virtual crisis hits. The idea is that a simulated meltdown can reveal real leadership traits.
In these exercises, participants might face a sudden supply chain failure, a public relations disaster, or a hostile takeover attempt. The game does not test their knowledge of spreadsheets or industry jargon. It tests how they handle uncertainty. Do they freeze? Do they delegate? Do they communicate clearly while the clock is ticking?
Proponents argue that traditional hiring methods are too polished. A candidate can rehearse answers to behavioral questions. But a simulation forces them to think on their feet. It exposes raw reactions under pressure. Some firms have reported that quiet candidates in interviews suddenly take charge in the game, while confident talkers crumble when the stakes feel real.
Critics warn that simulations are not perfect. They can favor people who are naturally good at video games, not necessarily good at running a company. There is also the risk of bias if the scenarios are designed around a narrow view of leadership.
Still, the trend is gaining traction. As work becomes more unpredictable, companies want to see how people behave when the rules change. A game might not reveal everything about a candidate. But it can show who stays calm when the building is on fire.
