Gamers Sue Sony For Allegedly Breaking California Digital Purchase Law

A group of consumers has taken legal action against Sony, alleging the company violates California law by misleading customers about what they actually own when buying digital games through the PlayStation Store. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, argues that Sony's use of the word "purchase" creates a false impression of ownership.

According to the complaint, consumers who buy digital games on PlayStation do not obtain ownership of those products. Instead, they receive only a revocable license that Sony can cancel at any time. The plaintiffs claim this practice breaks California's consumer protection laws, which require companies to clearly state when a transaction is not a true sale.

The case centers on the difference between buying a physical disc and downloading a digital file. With a physical game, the buyer owns the disc and can resell, trade, or lend it. With digital purchases, Sony retains control and can remove access if licensing agreements change or if the user violates terms of service.

The lawsuit seeks damages for California residents who bought digital games through the PlayStation Store, as well as a court order forcing Sony to change how it describes these transactions. Sony has not yet responded to the claims. Legal experts say the outcome could set a precedent for how digital goods are marketed and sold across the industry.
