A state-funded project that aimed to preserve over 60,000 video games for public access has shut down after its €1.5 million budget was exhausted. The International Center for the Preservation of Games, known as ICS, was once hailed as the world's largest publicly available game archive. It collected titles from museums and Germany's official ratings body, making them accessible to researchers, historians, and the general public. But now the initiative lies abandoned, with no clear path forward.
The timing of the collapse is especially painful for preservation advocates. The news comes just as Sony has signaled a major shift away from physical media, with many of its newer consoles and game releases leaning entirely on digital distribution. Without a robust archive, thousands of games risk disappearing forever when servers shut down or licenses expire. The ICS was supposed to be a safeguard against that loss, a place where even obscure or out-of-print titles could be studied and played. Instead, it has become another casualty of short-term funding cycles in a field that demands long-term commitment. The archive's fate now serves as a stark warning: preserving digital culture requires more than a one-time grant.
