Parent Review: We tried Seattle’s dinosaur VR adventure

Seattle's Sandbox VR recently launched "Age of Dinosaurs," a virtual reality experience that promises to put you face-to-face with prehistoric giants. I took three kids, ages eight, eleven, and thirteen, to see if it lived up to the hype. Here's what we found.

The setup is straightforward. You enter a small room, strap on a haptic vest and VR headset, and then you're transported into a jungle where dinosaurs are very much alive. The experience lasts about 30 minutes, and you move around a physical space while the virtual world shifts around you. My youngest was nervous at first, but the staff walked her through every step. By the end, she was dodging virtual raptors and laughing.

Cost is the biggest hurdle. Tickets run around $50 to $60 per person, depending on the time and day. For a family of four, that adds up fast. Is it worth it? For a one-time treat, yes. The graphics are sharp, the sound design is immersive, and the physical sensations-like feeling a T. rex stomp near you through the vest-are genuinely impressive. But it's not a repeat activity for most budgets.

Age recommendations from Sandbox VR say 10 and up, but my eight-year-old handled it fine with a calm temperament. Kids who scare easily might struggle. The experience is intense, with sudden dinosaur attacks and dark environments. For older kids and teens, it's a blast. For younger or sensitive children, consider a shorter or less intense VR option first.

"Age of Dinosaurs" delivers on spectacle. If you have the cash and a dinosaur-loving kid, it's a memorable afternoon. Just don't expect to go back every month.
