SEGA surprised fans at Summer Game Fest 2026 by revealing Tupac Shakur as a playable character in an upcoming title called Stranger Than Heaven. The rapper, who died in 1996, appears under the name Amaru. According to the studio, the character was built with full approval from Shakur's estate and, notably, without the use of artificial intelligence.
The announcement came during a showcase that highlighted several new projects, but the Tupac reveal quickly became the most talked-about moment. SEGA representatives emphasized that the character's likeness, voice, and animations were created through traditional performance capture and licensing agreements, not through AI-generated replication. This distinction matters because recent years have seen controversy over posthumous digital appearances using AI tools without clear consent from estates or families.
Stranger Than Heaven is described as a narrative-driven action game set in a surreal afterlife. Tupac's character, Amaru, is a guide and fighter who helps players navigate a dreamlike world inspired by mythology and street culture. The estate's involvement reportedly included access to archival recordings and input on how the character should be portrayed, ensuring the depiction aligns with Shakur's legacy.
No release date has been announced yet, but the game is expected on major platforms. For now, the news stands out as a rare example of a deceased artist appearing in a game through direct collaboration rather than digital resurrection.
