Falcom’s latest release, Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta, arrives on modern platforms as a port of a remaster of a remake—a convoluted lineage that speaks to the enduring appeal of Adol Christin’s adventures. Originally a 2012 remake of the 1989 Ys IV titles (Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys), this version refines the 2018 PS4 remaster with new features, making it the definitive way to experience the Celceta arc.
The game follows Adol as he explores the lush, uncharted forest of Celceta, recovering his lost memories while uncovering a plot involving ancient artifacts and a mysterious girl named Karna. Combat remains fast-paced, blending real-time action with party-based switching. The “Memoire” edition adds a “Speedster” mode for veterans, a “Timed Guard” mechanic for parrying, and a gallery of concept art. Visuals have been upscaled to 4K, though the PSP-era character models and environments show their age in close-ups.
Where the game truly shines is in its streamlined exploration. The map fills in automatically as you traverse, and a new “Auto-Map” feature highlights points of interest. The soundtrack, a remastered version of the original’s synth-rock score, remains a highlight. However, the story—while serviceable—leans heavily on JRPG tropes, and the voice acting is limited to Japanese with English subtitles.
For newcomers, Ys Memoire is a solid entry point into the series, offering a self-contained narrative and polished gameplay. For veterans, it’s a nostalgic revisit with enough tweaks to justify the return. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it polishes a classic to a mirror shine.
