5 Retro Video Games That Were Actually Huge Commercial Failures

The history of gaming is filled with beloved classics, but it's also littered with high-profile commercial disasters. Some of these titles, now considered retro, were financial sinkholes upon release despite their later cult status or innovative ideas.

A prime example is the ambitious Shenmue for the Sega Dreamcast. While critically praised for its detailed open world and narrative depth, its enormous development budget—reportedly over $70 million—made it impossible to turn a profit. Similarly, the cinematic platformer Heart of Darkness on PlayStation endured a troubled six-year development. The staggering costs simply couldn't be recouped through sales.

Then there are the infamous quality failures. Atari's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, rushed to market for the 1982 holiday season, was so poorly received that millions of unsold cartridges were famously buried in a New Mexico landfill. The Nintendo 64's Daikatana, hyped for years by developer John Romero, arrived late to scathing reviews and was a profound sales disappointment. Even Sega's technically impressive Night Trap for the Sega CD became a symbol of controversy rather than commercial success, its notoriety failing to translate into strong sales. These five titles stand as stark reminders that in the gaming industry, high hopes and big budgets are no guarantee of financial victory.
