Making Lego-inspired games in free Godot Engine looks easy with this dev's tool

A developer has released a tool for the free Godot Engine that dramatically simplifies the process of making Lego-inspired video games. Called Brickworks, the project was born from a personal dream: the creator wanted to play a classic Lego Ninjago game but found no modern equivalent that captured the same feel. Instead of waiting for an official release, they decided to build the tools themselves.

Brickworks handles the tricky parts of block-based game design. It automates the snapping of bricks together, manages the physics of interlocking pieces, and provides a library of virtual brick shapes. This means a single developer or a small team can focus on level design and gameplay rather than coding the core building mechanics from scratch. The tool runs entirely within Godot, which is free and open-source, removing the cost barrier of commercial engines.

The developer has shared early footage showing characters running through environments built entirely from these digital bricks. The visual style is intentionally reminiscent of the early 2000s Lego video games, with a focus on colorful, chunky geometry. While the tool is still in active development, the goal is to let anyone create their own Lego-style adventure without needing a large studio budget. For fans of blocky construction games and classic action-platformers, Brickworks could be the key to building the game they always wanted to play.
