Epic Games remains a privately held company, with its ownership structure dominated by founder and CEO Tim Sweeney. Sweeney holds the majority stake, giving him controlling interest in the Unreal Engine creator and Fortnite developer. However, several major entertainment and technology firms have acquired minority positions over the years.

Chinese conglomerate Tencent was an early investor, purchasing a 40% stake in 2012 for around $330 million. This deal helped Epic expand into the Asian market and provided capital for its growth. More recently, Sony invested $450 million in 2020 and another $200 million in 2021, securing a roughly 5% equity stake. The partnership has strengthened ties between Epic's Unreal Engine and PlayStation hardware.

Disney also entered the picture in 2024, investing $1.5 billion for a 9% stake. The deal came after a public falling out between Epic and Apple over App Store policies, and Disney's investment signaled confidence in Epic's long-term strategy. Despite these high-profile investors, Sweeney retains the largest share of voting power, ensuring he can steer the company's direction without outside interference. The company has not announced any plans for an initial public offering, keeping its financial details largely private.
