For years, the idea of running Doom on the Neo Geo was dismissed as a pipe dream. The hardware, famous for its arcade-perfect 2D fighting games, lacked the raw processing power and memory for a true 3D engine. But a group of dedicated hackers has now proven that the "impossible" port is not only possible, but playable.
The breakthrough comes from aggressive optimization and graphical compromises. Instead of trying to render the game's iconic texture-mapped walls, the developers have stripped the visuals down to their bare essentials. The result is a version of Doom that runs at a steady clip on the Neo Geo's 12 MHz CPU and 64 KB of RAM. To achieve this, the team used a technique called raycasting, but with a flat-shaded look that removes all texture detail. The game world is still fully navigable, with enemies, weapons, and the classic level layouts intact.
Critically, the port does not use the Neo Geo's sprite hardware in the traditional way. Instead, it treats the entire display as a single, fast-moving canvas. This approach bypasses the system's limitations, allowing for a smooth, first-person perspective that was never intended by the original designers. Early footage shows the player blasting through the first level, with the signature shotgun sound and enemy behavior all present.
While the graphics are far from the PC original, the achievement is a testament to the skill of the homebrew community. It proves that with enough clever coding, even the most unlikely hardware can run a classic. The project is currently available as a free download for those with the means to run it on original hardware or emulators.
