A significant shift is coming to video game age ratings across Europe. Starting this summer, any game featuring paid random-item loot boxes will automatically receive a minimum PEGI 16 rating. The move by the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system aims to provide clearer guidance to parents and guardians about games containing mechanics often compared to gambling.
The changes extend beyond loot boxes to address online safety. In a stricter measure, any game featuring player interaction that lacks tools to block or report other users will be slapped with a PEGI 18 rating. This rule underscores the growing importance of safeguarding players, particularly younger audiences, from potential harassment and abuse in online spaces.
These updates represent the first major overhaul of the PEGI criteria in nearly a decade. They reflect evolving concerns about digital consumer protection and the wellbeing of players. The board stated the adjustments are designed to bring its ratings in line with contemporary issues, ensuring labels more accurately reflect potential risks in modern gaming. The new rules will apply to all games submitted for rating from this summer onward.
