Becoming a Dad Didn't End My Love for Video Games. It Reignited My Passion for Them

Becoming a Dad Didn't End My Love for Video Games. It Reignited My Passion for Them

I used to think having a baby meant saying goodbye to late-night gaming sessions. When my partner and I found out we were expecting, I honestly wondered if I would ever finish another open-world game. Grand Theft Auto VI was on the horizon, and I figured that would be the last big title I would ever play. But something unexpected happened. Instead of pushing me away from the controller, becoming a dad actually pulled me back in.

The first few months were a blur of feedings, diaper changes, and very little sleep. I barely touched my console. But once we settled into a rhythm, I realized I needed a break. Not just a nap, but a mental escape. Video games became that escape. They are not a distraction from my responsibilities. They are a vital intermission. When the baby is finally asleep and the house goes quiet, I can slip into a digital world for an hour. It resets my patience and my energy.

I have learned to game in shorter bursts. I no longer marathon through a campaign over a weekend. Instead, I play for 45 minutes after the baby goes down. I pick up a side quest or explore a corner of the map. It feels more focused now. Every session matters. I appreciate the storytelling and the mechanics more because I know my time is limited. Games are no longer a default hobby. They are a chosen one.

Some people told me I would grow out of it. They said real life would take over. But real life is exactly why I need games now. They give me a space where I am not responsible for anyone else. I am just a character in a story. That feeling is precious. I am still going to play GTA VI. I will just do it with a baby monitor nearby.
