Edward Bartlett, a student from Sheffield, says birdwatching pulled him out of a dark place where he was spending up to 20 hours a day playing video games. At his lowest point, the routine of gaming had taken over his life, leaving little room for sleep, study, or social contact.
"I was stuck in a cycle," Bartlett said. "I would wake up, play games, eat quickly, and keep playing until I passed out. It felt impossible to stop." The addiction affected his grades and his mental health. He described feeling isolated and anxious, with no sense of purpose outside the virtual world.
The turning point came when a friend invited him for a walk in a local park. Reluctant at first, Bartlett agreed and noticed people with binoculars watching birds. Curious, he borrowed a pair and started paying attention to the birds around him. "It sounds simple, but spotting a kingfisher for the first time felt more rewarding than any video game achievement," he said.
Over the following months, Bartlett replaced gaming sessions with early morning walks. He learned to identify different species by their calls and colors. The fresh air and focus on nature helped him break the addiction. Now, he studies environmental science and leads a small birdwatching group on campus.
Bartlett hopes his story encourages others struggling with screen time to try something outdoors. "You do not need expensive gear. Just step outside and look up," he said.
