Supermassive Games is back with another entry in its horror anthology, and "Directive 8020" aims to put players on edge. The latest chapter in The Dark Pictures series trades historical ghost stories for a sci-fi nightmare, trapping a crew on a damaged spaceship with a shapeshifting alien. The setup is classic horror: a small group of people, a remote location, and a monster that could be anyone. The tension works. The game leans into paranoia and jump scares, and for fans of the studio's work, it delivers the kind of dread they expect.
But the question of whether it recaptures the magic of "Until Dawn" is a harder one to answer. "Until Dawn" felt fresh because it blended teen horror tropes with a branching narrative that genuinely surprised players. "Directive 8020" plays it safer. The quick-time events are back. The "butterfly effect" choices are back. The characters still make the same kind of bad decisions that get people killed. The setting is new, but the mechanics feel familiar. The game is scary enough to keep you playing through the night, but it does not reinvent the wheel. It is a solid horror experience for those who already enjoy the series, but it does not offer the breakthrough moment that "Until Dawn" did over a decade ago. For newcomers, it is a fine place to start. For veterans, it is more of the same, which is both a comfort and a limitation.
