EXIT 8 Director Genki Kawamura: The Weekend Warrior Interview

Opening on Friday, April 10, Genki Kawamura's psychological thriller Exit 8 takes audiences into a disorienting subterranean nightmare. The film, based on the popular video game, follows a man (Kazunari Ninomiya) desperately trying to escape a subway station to reach his pregnant girlfriend. Instead, he finds himself trapped in a perplexing loop where the only potential escape hinges on spotting subtle "anomalies" in his repeating environment and turning back before it's too late.

Kawamura, known for producing acclaimed animated films, sought to translate a unique interactive experience to the screen. "I wanted the audience to, at times, feel like they were the player within this game, and at times, feel like they were watching someone else playing," the director explained. This approach builds relentless tension as viewers, alongside the protagonist, scrutinize every detail of the endless tunnel, never knowing what unsettling sight might appear next.

Creating the film's central, looping corridor required ingenious practical methods. The production built two identical subway tunnel sets and connected them. "The shots where you see the film looping, we actually physically made that loop happen," Kawamura revealed. This analog process allowed for seamless filming, with actors like Yamato Kochi, who plays the haunting "Walking Man," bicycling between sets to maintain the continuous shot.

The director drew visual inspiration from Japanese animation masters like Satoshi Kon, aiming to project internal psychological states onto the environment. While Exit 8 is a contained thriller, Kawamura is already looking forward, preparing a new film and a novel titled The Horse and Eye, based on a true story, set for release this autumn.
