Five Absolutely Unhinged Steam Next Fest Demos You Should Try Right Now

The latest Steam Next Fest is here, and as usual, it is packed with weird, wonderful, and completely unhinged games. If you are tired of polished sequels and safe bets, this is your chance to dive into the strange corners of indie development. Here are five demos that stood out for their sheer absurdity.

First up is a game that asks the most important question of our time: what if a penguin had to solve a noir mystery? This point-and-click adventure puts you in the flippers of a hard-boiled detective bird navigating a gritty, snow-covered city. The dialogue is dry, the characters are bizarre, and the puzzles make no logical sense but somehow work perfectly.

Then there is the frog slaughter simulator. Do not let the cute amphibian protagonist fool you. This game is a fast-paced action title where you control a frog with a tiny sword, hopping through a medieval battlefield and taking down enemies twice your size. The combat is surprisingly tight, and the gore is cartoonishly excessive.

For those who prefer psychological horror, there is a demo about a sentient vending machine that starts talking to you. It begins as a simple conversation but quickly spirals into existential dread. The machine asks you to feed it items, and the outcomes range from hilarious to genuinely unsettling.

Another standout is a game where you play as a sentient pile of garbage trying to become a human. You roll through a city, absorbing trash and learning social skills. The mechanics are simple, but the writing is sharp and satirical.

Finally, there is a rhythm game where you control a dancing skeleton in a nightclub. The catch is that the music is generated by your own keyboard inputs. The more you mess up, the worse the song gets, creating a chaotic feedback loop that is both frustrating and hilarious.

These demos are free to try until the festival ends. If you want something that breaks the mold, start here.
