The foundation of the video game industry is often attributed to a handful of well-remembered classics. However, the arcade boom of the 1970s was built on a wider array of pioneering titles, many of which have faded from popular memory. These forgotten games introduced core concepts that would define gaming for decades to come.
One such title is "Computer Space" (1971), which holds the distinction of being the first commercially sold coin-operated video game. While its complex controls limited its success, it proved the viability of the arcade model. Similarly, "Speed Race" (1974) from Taito introduced the scrolling playfield and the steering wheel controller, laying the groundwork for every future racing game.
The shooter genre was also born in this era with "Gun Fight" (1975), the first game to use a microprocessor. This allowed for more detailed sprites and smoother gameplay, a massive technological leap. Meanwhile, "Heavyweight Champ" (1976) featured the first one-on-one fighting gameplay and depicted characters from a side perspective, a direct precursor to the fighting game genre. Finally, "Western Gun" (1975) offered early two-player competitive action with iconic cowboy themes.
These five games, though not household names, were instrumental. They transformed simple electronic amusements into a global cultural phenomenon by proving new concepts in technology, gameplay, and player interaction. Their DNA is present in nearly every modern game, making them true unsung architects of the digital playground.
