Keeping kids safe on Roblox: What parents say does and doesn’t work

As lawsuits against the gaming platform continue to wind through the court system, many parents say they have stopped waiting for Roblox to solve every safety problem on its own. Instead, they are taking matters into their own hands, sharing what has worked for their families and what has not.

For younger children, the most effective tool remains the account's built-in parental controls. Limiting who can message a child, restricting voice chat, and blocking access to certain games or experiences are steps that many parents say are essential. Some also require that all friend requests go through a parent's email for approval. These settings, while not perfect, give families a layer of protection that did not exist a few years ago.

But parents also point to serious gaps. One major complaint is that the platform's reporting system often feels slow or ineffective. Several parents described incidents where their child encountered inappropriate content or was contacted by strangers, and the response from Roblox took days or never came. That delay has led some families to simply ban the game entirely.

Others have found success by playing alongside their children. By logging into the same game or sitting nearby, parents can see exactly what their child is exposed to. This hands-on approach, while time-consuming, allows for immediate conversations about stranger danger, scams, and digital etiquette.

Still, there is no universal solution. Some parents rely on third-party monitoring apps that track screen time and flag suspicious messages. Others set strict time limits or only allow Roblox on a shared family computer. A few have switched to alternative games with simpler, more closed environments.

The lawsuits have drawn attention to these struggles, but for many families, the real work happens at home. Until the platform changes more aggressively, parents say they will keep adapting their own rules.
