Sony to end physical PlayStation game discs for new releases starting in 2028

Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. The company stated that all major new titles will be sold exclusively through digital downloads after that date, marking a significant shift in how gamers will buy and play their games.

The decision reflects a long-term trend in the gaming industry, where digital storefronts have steadily overtaken brick-and-mortar retail. Sony pointed to changing consumer habits, noting that a growing majority of players now prefer to purchase and download games directly rather than buy discs. While the company did not provide exact sales figures, industry analysts have observed that digital purchases now account for roughly 70 to 80 percent of all game sales on PlayStation platforms.

This move does not mean that all physical media will vanish overnight. Sony confirmed that existing games on disc will still be playable on current consoles, and some limited editions or collector's items may still include physical copies for a time. However, after 2028, the standard retail version of any new first-party PlayStation title will be digital only.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Some gamers welcome the convenience of not swapping discs or storing cases, while others worry about losing the ability to resell games or play them without an internet connection. Sony's decision also puts pressure on retailers that rely on game disc sales, as well as on used game markets.
