When Nintendo dropped "Donkey Kong" into arcades in 1981, it did more than introduce the world to Mario and a barrel-throwing ape. It created a template that rival companies scrambled to replicate. The game's blend of platform jumping, ladder climbing, and a damsel in distress proved irresistible to players, and within months, knockoffs flooded arcades. Here are five of the most notable attempts to cash in on that success.
First up is "Crazy Kong," a direct bootleg so blatant that Nintendo sued. It swapped the character sprites slightly but kept the same levels and mechanics. Many players didn't even know they were playing an unlicensed version. Then there's "Kong," released by a different company, which replaced the construction site with jungle-themed platforms but kept the same core idea of dodging obstacles while climbing upward.
"Space Panic" tried a different twist by adding digging mechanics, but the vertical platforming and enemy avoidance screamed "Donkey Kong" influence. "Miner 2049er" borrowed the ladder-and-platform structure while adding a health bar and more complex level designs. Finally, "Pooyan" swapped the ape for wolves and balloons, but the basic concept of climbing and avoiding threats remained intact.
None of these games matched the original's magic, but they proved how one hit could reshape an entire industry. For every genuine innovation, there were dozens of imitators trying to catch the same lightning in a bottle.
