The Real E3 Replacement is Almost Here

For years, the gaming calendar had a clear rhythm. E3 in June, then a quieter summer, then Gamescom in August. E3 was the big stage, the place where console wars were fought and billion-dollar trailers dropped. Gamescom was the bigger but less glamorous sibling, a massive public fair in Cologne where fans waited in line for demos. Then the pandemic hit, E3 stumbled, tried to come back, and finally collapsed for good. Gamescom, meanwhile, just kept going. It canceled its physical show in 2020, ran a digital event in 2021, and returned to the convention halls in 2022. Last year, it drew more than 320,000 visitors. This year, the organizers are expanding the floor space again, and every major publisher except Nintendo and Sony has signed up for the opening night showcase.

What happened is simple. Gamescom learned to adapt. It kept the core appeal, which is letting people actually play games, while adding a serious online broadcast that pulls in global viewership. E3 tried to be everything to everyone and ended up pleasing no one. Publishers wanted direct-to-consumer hype, not a trade show for retailers. Gamescom gave them that, but it also kept the messy, joyful chaos of a public event. The result is a hybrid that works. Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, and a dozen smaller studios will all be there in person. The show floor will be packed with playable builds, and the stage shows will stream to millions.

There is no single successor to E3, but Gamescom is the closest thing that exists right now. It has the scale, the industry support, and the momentum. The real test is whether it can keep that energy as the industry itself goes through layoffs and budget cuts. For now, though, the show that everyone once dismissed as the less important one is now the one that matters most.
