US Video Game Spending Falls 21% to $4.5B in June

Spending on video games in the United States fell sharply in June, dropping 21% to $4.5 billion compared to the same month last year, according to new data from market research firm Circana. The decline was largely driven by comparison to the June 2025 launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which had boosted sales significantly a year prior.

The report shows that hardware sales took the biggest hit, falling 43% to $1.1 billion. With the Switch 2 now in its second year, the initial surge in console and accessory purchases has cooled. Software spending also dropped, though less severely, declining 12% to $3.4 billion. This included a mix of physical and digital game sales, as well as in-game transactions.

One bright spot was the subscription sector, which grew 7% year-over-year. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online continue to attract more users, even as overall spending on individual games and hardware slows. Analysts note that the shift toward subscriptions is reshaping how consumers pay for gaming, with recurring revenue becoming a larger share of the market.

The June figures highlight the cyclical nature of the industry, where major hardware launches create temporary spikes that are difficult to sustain. Without a blockbuster new console or a major game release in June 2026, the market reverted to a more typical spending pattern. The data suggests that while the overall market is contracting from last year's peak, the underlying demand for gaming services remains strong.
