A Chinese monk who loves playing video games has sparked online discussion by saying his hobby and his faith serve similar purposes in life. The monk, known as Buddhist brother or Shi, told local media that engaging with others in violent and bloody online games is no different from playing chess. He explained that both activities require strategy, self-control, and a calm mind.
The monk, who lives in a temple in central China, said he enjoys games that involve combat and competition. He admitted that some people might find it strange for a religious figure to play such games, but he argued that the key is intention. According to him, the goal of both gaming and Buddhism is to train the mind and find inner peace. He compared the virtual battles to the mental challenges of meditation, saying both teach patience and focus.
However, he also acknowledged a potential downside. The monk said his only real worry is that he might become addicted. He stressed that moderation is important and that he sets strict time limits for himself. His comments have drawn mixed reactions online, with some praising his open-mindedness and others questioning whether violent games fit with Buddhist teachings. Still, the monk remains firm in his view that as long as the mind is clear, even a bloody game can be a path to understanding.
