New God of War Game Shifts Focus to Kratos' Wife Faye

Sony has officially announced "God of War: Laufey," a surprising new entry in the franchise that will mark the first game in the series without Kratos as the main character. Instead, the story will follow Laufey, the woman known to fans as Faye, Kratos' late wife and the mother of his son Atreus.

The announcement came during a recent PlayStation showcase, revealing that the game will explore events before the 2018 God of War reboot. Players will take control of Laufey, a giantess from Jotunheim who kept her true nature hidden from her family. The title uses her birth name, Laufey, which was revealed in the previous games as her original identity before she adopted the name Faye.

Developers described the game as a prequel that delves into Laufey's past as a warrior and her secret mission to protect the giants. The story will show how she met Kratos, why she chose to settle in Midgard, and the events that led to her carving the mysterious markings seen on trees in the earlier games. Combat will reportedly feature a mix of frost magic and close-quarters fighting, distinct from Kratos' Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos.

The decision to sideline Kratos has sparked debate among fans. Some are excited to see a new perspective, while others worry about changing the core formula. Sony has not announced a release date yet, but early reports suggest a launch window in late 2026.
