Sony has quietly increased the cost of PlayStation Plus subscriptions for new users, marking the first price hike for the service in several years. The change affects the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers, with monthly and three-month plans seeing the biggest jumps.
New subscribers now pay an extra dollar or pound for a single month of any plan, while the three-month option has gone up by three dollars or pounds. For example, the Essential tier now costs $10.99 per month instead of $9.99, and the three-month plan runs $31.99 instead of $28.99. The annual subscription remains unchanged for now, though Sony did not explain why the longer commitment was left alone.
The price adjustment applies only to new members signing up after the change took effect. Existing subscribers will keep their current rate until their next renewal, but they will face the higher prices if they let their membership lapse and later reactivate. Sony has not commented on whether the increase is tied to inflation, rising operational costs, or the addition of new features like cloud streaming for Premium users.
Some players have criticized the move, arguing that the service has not added enough value to justify the higher price. Others note that competitors like Xbox Game Pass have also raised prices in recent years, making this a broader industry trend. For now, the annual plan remains the best deal for those willing to commit to a full year.
